This Solutions Manual is intended as an aid to instructors that use the textbook
Principles of Optimal Design: Modeling and Computation, Second Edition by
Panos Y. Papalambros and Douglass J. Wilde, published by Cambridge University Press, New York, 2000.
It contains solutions to the exercise problems contained in the textbook.
The solutions were composed by graduate students at the University of Michigan based on
material accumulated over several years of instruction. Mr. Jeongwoo Han compiled and
corrected them in their present format. I would like to express my great appreciation to
all of my past students (and Mr. Han in particular) for this rather thankless job - in the middle of their research studies.
In spite of our efforts, some errors may still persist. Also, many problems can be solved
in more than one ways. Instructors or students that discover any needed corrections or omissions,
or have comments to offer, should communicate them to me at the address given on the back of the
cover or email me (pyp@umich.edu). Such input is very valuable and will be greatly appreciated.
